Ketchikan, Alaska An exciting new program that brings anglers even closer to the beauty of ocean life and sport-fishing in Alaska is now offered to lucky guests at Waterfall Resort Alaska for the 2022 season. After a successful test for kayak fishing during the 2021 season, Adam Fisk, an international kayak angler and expert based out of Los Buzos Resort in Panama, will be guiding guests at Waterfall Resort.

Upon an invitation by Adam Shoen, Property Manager at Waterfall Group’s luxury resort, Adam Fisk brought a team of expert kayakers including Denes Szakacs and Robwil Valerrey from Florida to “test the waters” in July of 2021.

Adam Fisk of Los Buzos Resort in Panama is an expert, international guide who is known for his kayak fishing tournament awards and success. He has put hundreds of guests on Roosterfish, Cubera snapper, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, broomtail grouper, and so much more, all from kayaks. He personally holds the top two largest gamefish ever caught from a kayak, both 500+ pound black marlin.

The idea for kayak fishing ignited when Adam Shoen, the manager of sister resort, Steamboat Bay Fishing Club, met up with Adam Fisk down in Panama. Fisk manages and guides for Los Buzos.

When visiting Waterfall Resort in 2021 to test the concept, Fisk was initially met by Waterfall Fishing Guide, Cy Williams. Fisk and his team learned the ropes of fishing in Alaska with a short intro session in the boat. Soon, they were in the kayaks and catching more fish than they ever thought possible.

Although they found that the preferred, Alaskan method of mooching works perfectly from kayaks, Fisk and his team also successfully tested several other techniques. In Old Town pedal-drive kayaks, the angler is completely hands free while fishing. Just three days at Waterfall produced catches of King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Halibut, Lingcod, true cod, massive yellow eye rockfish (released), black bass, and about 10 more species. One of the more exciting moments was landing a monster Pacific halibut that was carefully released after catching. You can view the video of the catch in the sidebar.

“We’re excited and looking forward to adding this new kayak angling program,” continues General Manager Cockrell. “We’ve booked two sets of 4 guests already in mid-August.”

About Waterfall Resort

The legend of Waterfall Resort Alaska started more than a century ago, when commercial fishing pioneers founded Waterfall Cannery near a natural waterfall amid 52 acres of rugged wilderness on Prince of Wales Island. They chose this location, on the island’s western shore, because the surrounding waters were known for phenomenal fishing and epic salmon runs. The resort, which renovated the historical cannery in 1982, enjoys this abundant fishery and beautiful, forested setting.

Waterfall Group, now a part of Harp Group, delivers extraordinary outdoor experiences in the inspiring, authentic Alaska destination, with proven expertise in adventure hospitality management on land, on the water, and in the air. Two all-inclusive Alaska sport fishing lodges in southeast Alaska are operated: Waterfall Resort Alaska, a stunning, 52-acre property renovated from a historic salmon cannery on Prince Wales Island, and Steamboat Bay Fishing Club, a small luxury-focused property on Noyes Island. A 90-minute flight from Seattle, resort guests are greeted at the Ketchikan airport and taken to the resorts by float plane.
